I Make Work For Myself

My in-laws have lots of apple trees. And they are extremely willing to share apples. And my m-i-l bought a handy steamer:

Since I'm not busy or anything, (very sarcastic, if you can't tell!) I decided to make apple juice. Yes, it's yummy, yes it's probably fairly healthy (no sugar added!). So now I have this:

And since I can't throw anything away or say NO to more work I decided to take the steamed apple pulpy leftover stuff and make this:

When am I ever going to learn that canning takes TIME?!! I know that we will eventually use it all and will appreciate it this winter but......22 jars of apple butter for 5 people?....and there's more apple pulpy leftover stuff where that came from?

So now I'm sitting here typing this post waiting on the last steamer load to finish...when I should be in bed. But you know how the saying goes: You can't teach an old dog new tricks!

And on a side note : Is it rude to refer to my husbands mother as my m-i-l? I don't mean it disrespectfully but for some reason when I type it, it comes across uncaring and rude. So sorry for that, my dear m-i-l. I appreciate you.

  1. You will LOVE the apple butter! We made some the year I was pregnant with Morgan...she is two... and we still have some left! We love it on french bread, homemade bread, any bread! In fact, yesterday Trent mentioned maybe making more this fall. Yummy!

    1) We like apple butter.

    2) I think that's the kindest thing I've ever heard you say about your 'm-i-l.

  5. Yum! So glad I found your blog (through Facebook, what a small world). I don't think it's rude to call your mil that, that's what she is :o)A friend of mine refers to her mil as mother-in-love.

  6. I would love to have the recipe for the yummy apple juice you made, that looks wonderful. I try to can and freeze when I can also. So far I've done corn, green beans, strawberries, beets, beet jelly (which tastes like grape jelly). And Strawberry freezer jam. I always try to use the suger free stuff. I'd love to know how you did the apple juice. Looks great!

I just used the steamer. Filled it full of quartered apples (mixed varieties) and let it steam for 2+ hrs. Then drained the juice into hot jars and put hot lids/rings on them. They seal themselves. Easy, easy...but you do have to have a steamer. I'm sure there is another way, but I don't know it!
