Homeschooling Adventures

I thought I better post some pictures of our recent activities as a reminder for me.  Sometimes the weeks go by and I forget that we actually HAVE done some fun things.  Sometimes the memories slip away in the muddle of laundry piles and diaper changes!

One of our local power companies came to the last day of co-op.  They put on a neat demonstration that was a great ending to BigM's power hour class.  We had pizza for lunch and then went on with our regular classes.  Made for a busy day, but also a good ending to our co-op year.

The next day we had Open House.  I helped in the beginner sewing class this year.  These reversible tote bags, zipper pouches, and rice packs are what they made this semester.

Little M and Little L both got to get on stage for a song...they had buckets for drums and water bottle rice shakers.  Thank you so much, helpers, for caring for my boys.  I was pretty busy in my classes and could only sneak a peek at them every now and then.
The older 2 also had performances, but their pictures had so many other children in them that I didn't post because I don't have permission.
Big M played two classical music pieces with boomwhackers.  What a fun way for a group to work together!
Big L's Worship Dance class showed what they have been learning with flags and a billow cloth to the song "How He Loves" by David Crowder Band.

L took a stained glass painting class this year.  She really liked this class. This is her final project.  It turned out beautifully!

Today we finally got around to making our Olympus Mons volcano erupt.  Water, food coloring, dish soap, baking soda, and vinegar....and you have a volcano.
It is very nice that the two oldest children are now getting old enough to take some responsibility and actually do experiments without so much help from me.

Now we are looking at about 6 (or so!) weeks until we finish our bookwork.  If you have children, you know the learning never really ends...but it will be nice when it can come at a little slower pace :)

Burrito Bowl

Per my husbands request, we had "Chipotle at Home" for lunch on Sunday.
  1. Totally embarrass yourself and stop at your local Chipotle and ask for some bowls for your Sunday lunch guests. Tell yourself that your husband supports them occasionally over lunch hour so surely they won't mind giving a handout.
2. Marinate Chicken Overnight
1 (2 ounce) package dried ancho chiles, soaked overnight
1 (7 ounce) can chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons cumin powder
2 tablespoons fresh oregano
chopped
6 cloves garlic
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 red onion, quartered
1/4 cup vegetable oil
I didn't use the dried peppers and I only used a few drops of oil to thin it out a bit. I just blended the rest of the ingredients and marinated the chicken overnight. Was a good amount of marinade for 7-8 chicken breasts.

3. Grill chicken, chop into pieces
4. Fix array of toppings
Rice-Fajita Vegetables-Black Beans-Pinto Beans (I need to learn how to fix these. eep)-Lettuce-Cheese-Sour Cream-Tomatoes-Corn Salsa-Guacamole

5. Enjoy leftovers for lunch the next day!

A Weekend Away

Remember this place?
We just can't stay away!

We spent a SCORCHING weekend with our cousins/friends...the little air conditioner and fan sure were appreciated!

...ditto on the pond...

I'm not sure how many times he jumped..but by the end of the weekend he was diving/flipping off of the dock. Swimming lessons sure helped him this year!

Thanks guys for sharing your vacation spot!

Sweet Spring Treats

I was having one of "those" mornings. The mommy burn-out kind.
  • the house looked overwhelmingly dirty and messy
  • laundry pile was daunting and never ending {is there any other kind of laundry pile?}
  • learning was minimal
  • Satan was telling me that I could never keep up

So, school books got put away because I need an attitude adjustment. Soon I heard a tap-tap on the back door. It was a dear friend with a sweet treat and an "I understand you've been having some interesting times" {She's been in the new-baby-now-mom-to-four category recently too} What a blessing her smiling face was today!

What's inside....??

mmm..mmm.mmmmm!

And these are the flowers my children brought in from outside......ever loving and forgiving children!
And I had a chat on the phone with another friend...she reminded me to make sure I was spending time with God and to spend some just-having-fun-time with my children. I think it's time to follow her advice, cause obviously doing this mom to four thing on my own strength isn't working too well!
I hope to post pics soon of one of our "interesting times"!

God Food

We had the privilege (and yes, it's work...but a privilege!) of picking raspberries last evening. It was a nice cool evening and we had the company of great friends.

BigM picking away...by the looks of his mouth when he finished, I think he may have sampled a few!?!

Doesn't she look like she's having fun? You could visit her blog and tell her how much you liked her picture!

Definitely not a clean job!

L had the camera and took most of the pictures. I had to include this not-so-flattering photo to prove that I at least picked one berry!

The berries we brought home! I know these will taste so yummy this winter. Smoothies...cobblers...on ice cream...on oatmeal..! I'm thankful that I was able to pick some. I just couldn't make up my mind about going because I felt busy...now I'm so glad that I took the time.
And of course, it only seems fitting to make a spiritual application (don't bloggers seem to do that? :))
As much as I desired the natural fruit, I should so much more desire to let the Spirit produce these fruits in me: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
I don't quite know how to explain it. But I do know that I'm learning that I can't muster up enough gumption to produce ANY of these fruits on my own. It is only Christ in me. My righteousness is as filthy rags.

Things We've Been Up To

Yesterday the children played outside in the water. Sometimes I groan at the dirty, grassy swim things. It is so worth it though, because they play together for a long time and then they are tired and don't have any trouble falling asleep!

My cautious one...he preferred that the boat was wet, not him.

My not-so cautious one. What fun is a kiddie pool if you can't run and jump and splash all the water out? It may be time to upgrade pool sizes, don't you think?

Quite pleased with himself.

We've been spending our mornings this week here:

...at Crocodile Dock! (aka: vacation bible school)

This was our Bible point for today.

I'm helping in the Video Theater. The material is geared toward the kids, of course. But I have been able to gain alot of encouragement also.

So, I haven't forgotten about blogland. I've just had alot going on!

Harvest Party!

Smores, hot dogs, popcorn, a warm campfire, and friends....what could be more fun? Ok. So it was kinda chilly. But who cares? Not Me!

This picture is for you, Rachel! (No I'm not talking to myself!)

My New/Old Laundry Sink

When we bought our house, there was an old porcelain (I think) sink hanging on the basement wall. When we started fixing up the basement (many yrs ago now!) we just took the sink down and put it in the garage. We were just hoping that someday we'd find a perfect spot for it.

Well - now it's in use again - and I really like it. Thanks to some dear friends (you know who you are!) who willingly helped, we have a usable basement. And use it we do! I think we spend more hours downstairs than up. School, laundry, sewing, playing, office work, etc. When you live in a small house, every space counts!
I'll post some before/after pictures of the basement another time. I don't have the before pictures from a friend yet, and the basement is too messy right now to take after pictures!
Another post for another day....!

This One's For You, Laura!

Absolutely hilarious -

Laura, here's the proof: R is smart and you can't pull much on him!

Sorry this picture is blurry - I think I was laughing too hard to keep the camera still. I knew that a ventriloquist had to be talented....but I was amazed. Talk about talent & wit..hilarious! And an awesome gospel message too! What a fun way to spend an evening!

Labor Day Weekend Fun (and work!)

My weekend started out Friday eve with work! When I finally went to bed at 1:00 I had canned 20 pint of salsa, 14 pint and a half jars of spaghetti sauce, 16 pint of sloppy joe sauce, and 12 jars of grape juice. I guess I don't even need to say that my feet were sore! Thankfully I had my hubby's help marking them and putting them away on Saturday. That's a job in itself!

ETA: pint or pints?

We had some friends over on Sunday. See previous post! Fun day!

We spend yesterday just hanging out. It was fun to relax with the four people that I love the most!

Our swing broke probably about a year ago....so the children were quite pleased to have it fixed!

Who says leftovers can't be fun?

It was fun to have a holiday weekend. Now it's back to school and the normal schedule. Whatever normal is!

Messy, Messy!

I just felt prompted to post this:

We had some friends stay EXTREMELY TOO LATE tonight. And our house is really messy.

Thanks for coming A & R ! We appreciate your friendship.

and, hhmmmmm.....will this generate any comments??
