1 bar Fels-Naptha
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax
Process Fels-Naptha in food processor until it's a fine powder. Mix with washing soda and borax. Use 1 Tbsp. for light/small loads or 2 Tbsp. for heavy/full loads.
I really like this recipe. It smells fresh and clean. I think the next time I make it I may mix in some oxi-clean to help keep my whites white.
I like to buy Fels-Naptha as soon as I use what I have. It seems like the 'fresh' soap doesn't grind quite as fine..I think letting it sit dries it out a little.
On the shelf - ready for laundry day!
Mr. Steady and I can't stand the smell of FelsNaptha. I liked it the first time I made it but the longer I used it the worse it got. (I grate mine using a cheese grater on my KitchenAid BTW, in case some of your readers don't have a food processor).
ReplyDeleteTo make a short story long, I have been buying the very cheapest laundry detergent possible and using equal parts Borax and Washing Soda. Seems to do an efficient job.
We love FelsNaptha! I've been making the liquid recipe and we have loved it. I also use vinegar now for Fabric Softener. It rinses all the soap out, doesn't leave a residue on your clothes that can be harmful, and it DOES NOT make your clothes smell like vinegar:-)
ReplyDeleteI am almost out of laundry soap and haven't gotten too far on making a new batch. All I've done is grate the soap! The process for making the liquid takes a little time and I just haven't had the time. I'm going to try this instead!
Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteThis is the recipe I use:

4 lbs Borax
4 lbs Arm & Hammer washing soda
4 lbs of reg baking soda
(I let my soap set out uncovered for about 4 weeks to dry out before grating it)
grate soap, add rest, stir in a big bowel and keep in a airtight container.
I use
2 Tbs for small loads
3 Tbs for med loads
4 Tbs for Large to heavy soild loads
I also use vinagar in the wash for softer clothes and towels, and I also use hotest water temp when washing plain whites with a scoop of oxi clean (powder form).
